  Bayesian Structural Equation Modelling:
  Methods and Applications

  

  Dr KD Dang, The University of Western Australia

  Structural equation models (SEMs) are commonly used to study the structural relationship between observed variables and latent constructs. For example, a person’s cognitive function can be assessed through their performance on a battery of neurodevelopmental tests. Recently, Bayesian fitting procedures for SEMs have received more attention, as they overcome the issues of frequentist approaches when the number of observations is small and facilitate the adoption of more flexible model structures. In this talk, I will discuss the challenges of Bayesian estimation of SEMs, through an example of their application in analysing the dose-response relation between prenatal alcohol exposure and child cognition. I will then introduce our framework for fitting Bayesian SEMs via variational approximations, that provides a fast alternative to Markov chain Monte Carlo procedures.

  About the Speaker

  Dr Khue-Dung (KD) Dang is a Senior Lecturer in Statistics at the University of Western Australia. KD received her PhD from the University of New South Wales in 2020. Prior to joining UWA, she was an ACEMS Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Technology Sydney (2019-2021) and then a Lecturer in Data Science and Statistics at the University of Melbourne (2021-2024).

  KD’s research interests lie in Bayesian computation and Bayesian modelling, with a focus on developing efficient methods for Bayesian inference in settings involving multiple outcomes data. She also works on simulation-based methods for large data sets.

  Tim is a seasoned Science Communicator with extensive experience in journalism and a passion for bridging the gap between complex research and broad audiences. Before joining the Statistical Society of Australia, Tim spent a decade leading communications for the Australian Data Science Network (ADSN), the QUT Centre for Data Science, and the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS).

  In these roles, he specialised in empowering researchers to share their work effectively, fostering deeper connections between their discoveries and the wider community. Originally from the United States, Tim enjoyed a distinguished 25+ year career in television news, working across three states. For more than 15 years, he served as Executive News Producer at a leading TV station in Phoenix, Arizona, where he managed the evening newscasts in one of the nation’s fastest-growing markets.

  Speaker: Professor Renate Meyer

  
  

  Renate is Professor of Statistics at the University of Auckland. After obtaining an MSc and PhD in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Aachen, Germany, she took up a lectureship at the University of Auckland in 1994. In 2010, 2017, and 2018, she held visiting professorships at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg in Germany, and the Observatorie de la Côte d'Azur in France. She was awarded a James Cook Research Fellowship by the Royal society of NZ in 2018 for research on noise characterization studies for laser-interferometric gravitational wave observatories and the Littlejohn Research Award of the NZ Statistical Society in 2020. 

  Renate has wide research interests in applied Bayesian inference, in particular time series analysis with applications in astrophysics, state-space modelling in ecology, multivariate modelling using copulas, survival analysis in medical statistics, and stochastic volatility models for financial time series. 

  Title: Statistical Challenges of the LISA Space Mission 

  Abstract:

  The new era of gravitational wave astronomy truly began on September 14th, 2015, with the groundbreaking first direct detection of gravitational waves, when LIGO recorded the signal from the merger of two black holes. This discovery confirmed a major prediction of Einstein's general theory of relativity and opened an entirely new observational window onto the universe. Since then, across four runs by the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA network, gravitational waves from approximately 300 compact binary mergers have been reported. 

  Ongoing efforts are improving the sensitivity of current ground-based detectors, while next-generation observatories such as the Einstein Telescope and the Cosmic Explorer are being planned. In addition, the future Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will observe gravitational waves from space and open the low-frequency window of gravitational wave detection, enabling the observation of a wide range of sources - including white dwarf binaries within the Milky Way and mergers of supermassive black holes at the centres of galaxies. However, approximately ten years before the launch of the LISA mission, the scientific community is still far from solving some of the major methodological and computational challenges that will determine the mission's success. 

  Realizing the full scientific potential of these observations requires careful statistical analysis, particularly in characterizing the background noise by accurately modelling spectral features. This review will cover the fundamentals of gravitational wave data analysis, with an emphasis on LISA. Key challenges in this new data analysis regime will be highlighted, and novel Bayesian nonparametric  methods for spectral density estimation and correlated and locally stationary noise will be proposed.

  The SSA, South Australian Branch proudly presents E. A. Cornish memorial lecture/National Speaker Series presented by Professor Martin Hazelton, Dept. Mathematics and Statistics, University of Otago (NZ).

  Abstract

  Consider data comprising the locations of disease cases and controls over some geographical region. An important epidemiological question is whether the risk of disease varies tangibly across space. To examine this matter, the spatial relative risk function was developed in the 1980s. It is defined as the ratio of the two underlying spatial densities, and can be estimated using kernel smoothing. However, this procedure is often challenging in practice because of the high degree of spatial inhomogeneity in the distributions.

  This talk describes the 40-year history of refinements of the original methodology, including improvements to estimators and developments addressing associated inferential problems, such as testing for temporal changes in the spatial pattern of risk. While the spatial relative risk function continues to be widely used in geographical epidemiology, today's state-of-the-art methods have also been adopted by researchers in fields like archaeology and ecology.

  A/Prof Sofia S. Villar - MRC Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge, UK

  Since September 2020, Sofia has been an MRC Investigator (Programme Leader) working as part of the Efficient Study Design (ESD) theme of the MRC Biostatistics Unit. Her research aims to improve clinical trial design through the development of innovative methods that lie in the intersection between optimisation, machine learning and statistics.

  In 2025, Dr Villar was awarded the Frank Hansford-Miller Fellowship, supporting collaboration between the Australian and UK statistical communities. As part of the Fellowship, she will visit Perth to deliver a keynote presentation and participate in ASC2025 activities

This course bridges the gap between writing isolated R functions and creating documented packages that can be easily distributed, and is designed for those who might be curious about R package development but haven't had the time or guidance to get started.
  
  You'll learn the essential tools of the trade: `usethis` and `devtools` for package structure, `roxygen2` for documentation, `testthat` for testing, and Git/GitHub for sharing your work.

  The 12th International Conference on Teaching Statistics (ICOTS 12), to be held in Brisbane, 12–17 July 2026, will be the first time ICOTS will be hosted in Australia.
