The Statistical Society of Australia is pleased to invite you to the following workshop:

Version control using Git and RStudio

presented by the Curtin Institute for Computation (CIC) over two days on

  • 10 September 2020 (11:00 AM-12:30PM Australian Eastern Standard Time) and
  • 11 September 2020 (11:00 AM-12:30PM Australian Eastern Standard Time)

The CIC is a multidisciplinary Institute based at Curtin University in Bentley, Western Australia. The CIC employs a team of Data Scientists who assist both Curtin University researchers and external collaborators in applying computational methods across the sciences, engineering, social sciences, health science, business, and the humanities to provide innovative solutions to complex problems. The CIC Data Scientists also run a variety of computational training workshops to upskill participants in domain-specific training covering the full lifecycle of data-driven research.

In particular, the CIC collaborates with The Carpentries to teach foundational coding and data science skills, running workshops such as version control and introduction to data analysis in R and python. The CIC Data Scientists facilitating this proposed workshop are certified Carpentries Instructors with significant training experience.

About the workshop

This workshop will be adapted from the Software Carpentry Lesson “Version Control with Git.  Version control is an efficient method of keeping a record of changes made to your work over time. Each set of changes creates a new commit of the files and the version control system allows users to recover old commits reliably and helps manage conflicting changes made by different users.  It is extremely useful for collaborating with others and for managing individual projects, and a crucial component of reproducible research.

This workshop will teach version control using Git, a free and open source distributed version control system. The workshop will be interactive. Participants will learn from a combination of presentation slides, live coding and group learning though break out sessions with fellow participants.

The workshop will cover the following:

  1. Introduction to the workshop and tools
  2. Introduction to version control
  3. Introduction to Git and using Git from RStudio
  4. Collaboration through remote repositories in GitHub

Target audience

The course is aimed at those who want to learn more about version control and reproducibility of their research.

Requirements

Participants must have a laptop with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc.) that they have administrative privileges on. Participants will be required to prepare for the workshop in advance. Detailed set up instructions will be provided one week before the workshop, with an opportunity for participants to contact the CIC for set up assistance if required.

Prerequisites

No prior knowledge of the tools is required, but some knowledge of bash and the command line will be advantageous.

We will also teach using Git from RStudio. Participants who do not use RStudio will be welcome to participate if they wish to learn, but prior knowledge of RStudio will also be advantageous.
