Henstridge-Praeger Statistics Scholarships - Applications open in early December


The Henstridge-Praeger Statistics Scholarships are jointly awarded by the Statistical Society of Australia (SSA) and the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI). The Scholarships are made possible by a major philanthropic gift from Professor Cheryl Praeger AC and Dr John Henstridge, which has been invested in perpetuity to provide awards in statistics and mathematics in Australia.

Scholarship amount $2,500; multiple scholarships will be available in each year

Program Students must be enrolled in Statistics courses accounting for at least 50% of a full-time equivalent load and in the final year of their program in the year in which Scholarship applications close. Suitable programs of study might include, but are not limited to, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences, Bachelor of Statistics, Bachelor of Data Analytics, Bachelor of Business Analytics, or an equivalent AQF 7 Bachelor degree.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must be:

  • Enrolled in Statistics major courses (or equivalent) comprising at least 50% of a full-time study load in the year in which Scholarship applications close. The Statistics courses must be at Level III or above.
  • Undertaking the final year of an undergraduate degree program in the year in which Scholarship applications close.
  • The Statistics study sequence could be part of a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Mathematical Science, Bachelor of Statistics, Bachelor of Data Analytics, Bachelor of Business Analytics, or an equivalent program of study. Completion of, or enrolment in, courses that encompass statistical inference, data analysis, statistical communication skills, and the use of a statistical package is expected. At least two courses covering material from the following list should also be included in the overall study sequence: probability and distribution theory, linear models, design of experiments, sampling methods, multivariate analysis, analysis of categorical data, time series, survival analysis, statistical consulting, and statistical graphics.
  • Enrolled on a full-time basis in a Commonwealth Supported Place.
  • An Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Important information:

  • You must meet all the above listed criteria to be eligible to apply.
  • The Scholarships must be taken up in the year in which they are offered.

Selection of the successful candidate will be made according to:

  • Academic merit judged on basis of academic transcript (GPA) and proof of enrolment detailing courses to be studied in the year in which Scholarship applications close.
  • Answers to the following questions (maximum of 1 page to address)
  1. What inspired you to pursue studies in statistics? Describe any specific experiences, interests, or goals that influenced your decision.
  2. How do you envision using your statistical knowledge in your future career? Include any areas of application that excite you (e.g. health, environment, sports, economics, technology, other data sciences.).
  3. Describe a significant academic challenge you have faced and how you overcame it. What did you learn about yourself in the process?
  4. How would you use this scholarship to support your interests in statistics?
  5. Optional: Is there anything about your personal or educational background that you would like the selection panel to consider in support of your application?
