Join us for the Professional Skills for Statisticians series, hosted by the SSA Mentoring Program. This professional development series is invaluable to statisticians who are looking to improve and enhance their skills in communication, time and project management. You can attend individual workshops or enrol for the full series at a discounted rate.

Effective communication is critical for a successful career in statistics. Although an essential skill, communication is rarely emphasised in university training for statisticians. Where offered, communication courses typically focus on written or oral presentation skills. While useful, these courses overlook effective strategies for day-to-day communication required by statisticians when working with people with other (non-statistical) areas of expertise. In this presentation, I will discuss essential communication skills statisticians need and provide tips and examples of how I use these skills in my own work. I will describe how to establish trust when working with a new collaborator or client, how to guide communication pathways, and how to value the experience you bring to a collaboration or consultation.

Presenter: Karen Lamb

Karen is a biostatistician at the University of Melbourne where she co-Heads the Biostatistics and Clinical Epidemiology Node of the Methods and Implementation Support for Clinical and Health research (MISCH) Hub. MISCH provides support to clinical and health researchers across the university and affiliated hospital partners. Karen has over 15 years’ experience as a collaborating biostatistician and is passionate about mentoring and supporting the development of communication skills in statisticians.
