Presentation

From Electrons in the Cosmos to Electrons in Power Grids

Dr Ben Quici, Horizon Power.

Transitioning from academia to industry often raises questions about the practical application of research skills. As a data scientist at Horizon Power, I've found that the skills honed during my PhD in radio astronomy — including statistical modelling, data analysis, and complex problem-solving — are not only transferable but essential for tackling real-world challenges. This talk will offer a glimpse into a day in my life as a data scientist, exploring how I leverage these skills to address critical issues in the energy sector, such as customer decarbonisation, electricity demand forecasting, and optimising operational efficiency. I'll share examples of projects I’ve worked on, discuss the most valuable skills for this role, and provide a candid perspective on what it's like to solve problems using data outside the academic setting.

About the Speaker

Ben Quici is a data scientist at Horizon Power, where he applies his data analysis and research skills to address challenges in the energy sector, including customer decarbonisation, electricity demand forecasting, and optimising operational efficiency. He holds a PhD in radio astronomy, where he combined observations with simulations and statistical modelling to study the evolution of supermassive black hole jets. With almost three years in the industry, Ben provides a recent perspective on how a background in academic research is utilised and applied to solve business challenges.

Refreshments and Dinner

Members and visitors are invited to mingle over wine and cheese from 5:30 PM onwards at the venue.

Following the meeting, all are invited to dine afterwards at a local restaurant with the speaker. Visitors are welcome.
