Vic Branch – We all count: Strengthening stats and maths through diversity

Initiatives to increase the diversity of the statistics and mathematics workforce are flourishing around Australia and around the world: but what impact do these initiatives have? In this event, we will talk to some of the women leading initiatives to increase the representation of women in stats and maths. Join us for an evening of discussion around why diversity is important, what some of the barriers to women’s equal participation in STEM fields are, what is being done to break these barriers down, and what you can do.

A panel discussion will follow a series of short talks:

• Prof. Claudia Czado (Technical University of Munich) will talk about her work with the Global Challenges for Women in Math Science program.
• Prof. Jessica Purcell (Monash University) will talk about AustMS’s Women in Mathematical Sciences Special Interest Group
• Dr. Jessica Kasza (Vice-President of Statistical Society of Australia) will talk about our Society's work to prevent and respond to harassment within our community.
• Anna Quaglieri (Former main organiser of R-Ladies Melbourne) will talk about the aims of R-Ladies Melbourne and how their activities relate to statistics.
