SSA peer-review seminar and panel discussion

Are you curious about the peer-review process used by academic journals? Have you been asked to review a paper for a journal but not sure where to start? Do you want to improve your own academic writing and chance of getting published?

In this seminar, Dr Myra McGuinness will provide a general overview of the peer-review process. This will be followed by a panel discussion on reviewing statistical methodology papers with Prof Kate Lee, Prof Andrew Forbes and Prof. Alan Welsh. This session is targeted at students and early-career statisticians, but we welcome anyone with questions about peer review to join.

Dr Myra McGuinness:

Dr Myra McGuinness is the head of biostatistics at the Centre for Eye Research Australia and is passionate about incorporating best-practice research methodology when designing research studies and assessing results. Myra has extensive experience in both writing and reviewing journal articles.

Prof Kate Lee:

Prof Kate Lee is a senior biostatistician at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, with over 15 years' experience in the design, planning and analysis of randomised trials and observational studies. Her methodological interest is in multiple imputation for dealing with missing data and adaptive clinical trial designs. Kate has reviewed papers for a range of both applied and statistical journals. She served as Associate Editor for Statistical Editor for the journal series Paediatric Anaesthesia from 2015-2018, and is currently an Associate Editor for Statistics in Medicine.

Prof Andrew Forbes:

Andrew Forbes

Prof Andrew Forbes is the current Head of the Biostatistics Unit in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University. He has research interests in design and analysis of cluster randomised trials, interrupted time series designs, and the application of causal modelling principles to practical problems. He has been an Associate Editor of Statistical Methods in Medical Research for over 10 years.

Prof Alan Welsh is the E.J. Hannan Professor of Statistics at the Australian National University Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Statistics. Alan has received multiple awards for his research on statistical inference, statistical modelling and robustness (particularly on mixed models and model selection for mixed models), and the analysis of sample surveys. Alan is a former Editor-in-Chief of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Statistics and is currently a Co-editor of Biometrics.

Dr Rheanna Mainzer (chair):

Dr Rheanna Mainzer is an early career biostatistican at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, where she develops methods for handling missing data and provides statistical support to applied researchers working in child health. Rheanna is a newcomer to peer review.
