Maintenance Policy for a Latent Degradation System

Dr Soudabeh Shemehsavar of Murdoch University

Equipment availability plays an essential role in running an industrial plant with respect to production expectations. Every hour of component availability adds value to production and operations. Maintenance planning is vital to assure the ready availability of facilities. Optimization of maintenance planning schedules can generate significant benefits by providing a quality service and by ensuring service continuity and regularity. In this seminar we focus on deterioration modelling and condition-based maintenance planning for systems where the degradation phenomenon leading to failure is not directly observable or measurable. The system is monitored by tracking the evolution of a marker index that is correlated to the degradation and can be obtained through inspections. To model this configuration, a bivariate gamma process is used. Two condition-based maintenance policies are proposed and analysed to obtain their expected cost rates which are then applied for policy optimization. A numerical study is presented to demonstrate the implementation of the method and illustrate the utility of the preferred approach.

About the Speaker

Dr Soudabeh Shemehsavar received an MSc in Statistics from Amirkabir University of Technology and a PhD in Statistics & Stochastic Processes from Amirkabir University of Technology. She has extensive experience in teaching, supervision and research in probability, statistical modelling, and data analysis. Her research interests are very diverse and include generalised Poisson-Dirichlet processes with application to species sampling models and population genetics, cure models in survival analysis and protein aggregation propensity analyses using hidden Markov and logistic regression models, Bayesian deep learning, ensemble learning methods for high dimensional data, machine learning for survival analysis and stochastic degradation modelling of engineering systems and maintenance policies. She is one of the Chief Investigators of a 2-year project in deterioration modelling and maintenance in power generation subsystems funded by the French government.

Meeting directions

The meeting will be held at the Perth campus of Murdoch University which can be reached via the Kwinana Freeway, exiting on South Street, and heading west towards Fremantle.

Parking is free on the Murdoch Perth campus after 5:00PM in red and green zones.  A convenient carpark is Car Park 2 accessible from Entry C off South Street.

Innovation Hub (Room 002) is found on level 3 of Building 360, also known as Boola Katitjin. From the northern main entrance of the building head south along the length of the building until you reach the lifts, then head right through double doors and find the Innovation Hub on your left. See: Murdoch Map.

Refreshments

Members, visitors, and guests are invited to mingle over wine and cheese from 5:30PM. These will be served in the scenic staff area accessed through the back door of the meeting venue.

Dinner

Following the meeting everyone is invited to dine with the speaker and fellow attendees at Bateman Chinese Eating House (6/22 Parry Avenue, Bateman), booked for 7:30PM.

Directions: From Car Park 2, exit the campus turning right onto South Street and at the first set of traffic lights turn left onto Murdoch Drive. At the large roundabout turn right onto Hawke Pass which becomes Parry Avenue. Continue along Parry Avenue until reaching the Bateman Commercial Centre on the right where the restaurant is located.
