The SSA ACT proudly presents the biennial Knibbs Lecture presented by Mevin Hooten, Professor, Department of Statistics and Data Sciences, The University of Texas at Austin.
Topic: Cognition, physiology, and dynamic statistical models for movement
For wild animals, cognitive and physiological processes such as decision making and energetics are critical in understanding biomechanics and movement ecology and also scale up to influence food webs. Commonly used statistical models for telemetry data lack an explicit, mechanistic connection to physiological dynamics. State-of-the-art movement models are often comprised of mixtures and these provide a natural way to account for biological processes we know exist. Using continuous-time formulations, mixtures of integral and differential equations can provide a deeper understanding of processes that drive animal movement. The speaker will demonstrate these statistical approaches to study the movement of a variety of taxa including birds, reptiles, and mammals.
Presenter: Mevin Hooten
Mevin Hooten is a Professor in Statistics and Data Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on developing statistical methodology for ecological and environmental applications that involve spatial and spatio-temporal data. Mevin is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the ASA section on statistics and the environment. He has authored over 185 papers and 3 textbooks and serves as Associate Editor for Biometrics, Environmetrics, and JABES.

The Knibbs Lecture is named in honour of Sir George Handley Knibbs. Further details are at Statistical Society of Australia - ACT Branch - Knibbs and Wilson Lectures.
After the lecture, there will be a dinner at Amara Indian Restaurant, The Melbourne Building, 51-53 Northbourne Avenue, Canberra City.
If you are interested in attending the dinner, please RSVP by 5pm Tuesday 18 November by entering your details into the SSA ACT Branch dinner attendance sheet or contacting Warren at warren.muller@csiro.au or 0407 916 868. Please regard this as a firm commitment, not just an intention. For withdrawals after the deadline, please remove your name from the sheet and phone or text 0407 916 868.
NOTE: SSA ACT branch are offering discounts to SSA early career and student members who attend dinner! For this meeting, dinners will be a fixed charge of $15 for student members and $25 for early career members.
