- Interested in a relaxed evening of social fun and non-statistics mayhem with fellow SSA members?
- Want to see some of Australia's best presenters in statistics/data science strut their stuff??
- Want to earn some money (cause you know...this always gets people interested!)???
SSA NSW + Canberra is hosting a joint social event where we have invited some of the best statisticians/data scientists around Australia to present a set of lightning talks. The catch? It won't be on statistics, in fact, they won't even know what topic they will be presenting on until shortly beforehand! Think of it like poetry-slam but with slides (slide-slam!), or for those who remember, the show "Thank God you're here"
Date: Wednesday 7 October
Time: Roughly 6pm to 7pm. There will probably be some time beforehand if people want to pop in and mingle.
Some of awesome speakers lined up (shout outs to them for volunteering to take part!):
- Janan Arslan (Melb)
- Alan Huang (UQ)
- Jessica Kazsa (Monash)
- Hien Nguyen (La Trobe)
- Jake Olivier (UNSW)
- Alice Richardson (ANU)
- Louise Ryan (UTS)
- Georgy Sofronov (MQ)
How will it work (roughly speaking)?
Speakers will be provided with their topic and a handful of slides a shortly before their talk. Then the evening will proceed like how many speed talk sessions are run e.g., ~five mins per talk, people can ask a few quick questions afterwards. There will be a poll at the end for people to vote on the winner (and they will be showered with applause and a bit of money)!
Of course this event is all about having a bit of fun and keeping the spirits up, especially in this current environment, so it is important we do not take the evening too seriously. At the same time, please keep in mind that, as with all events, attendees must behave and interact in an appropriate manner as reflected in the SSA code of conduct.
Say no more! How do I register?!
For security reasons, registration to attend the online branch meeting is required beforehand. Please register in advance for this meeting. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email in due course containing information about joining the meeting. Any questions, please feel free to contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Submit your slides!
Lastly, we are inviting anyone who has slides which they think will be appropriate for such a slide slam to contribute them to email@example.com. There is no requirement on the slides, only that they are not on a topic connected to statistics or data science! Please also keep in mind that any slides should not contain material that is insulting, hateful, obscene or offensive.
An example of such slides can be found here.
If we end up using your slides in some form, then you will receive a $25 prize voucher!
