Implementing the Estimand Framework in Clinical Trials

    Date: Monday 16th February

    Fees: Standard $540, Student $390

Presenter/s: A/Prof Sabine Braat, University of Melbourne and Doherty Institute; Dr Anneke Grobler, Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and the University of Melbourne.

    Overview:

At the end of this course you will be familiar with the estimand framework for clinical trials. You will understand the elements of the estimand, including intercurrent events and the five suggested strategies for handling intercurrent events.  You will understand how to analyse trials using some of these strategies.

Pairwise and Network Meta-analysis: Fundamentals and Beyond

Dates: Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th February

Fees: Both days: Standard $1020, Student $740 / Single day: Standard $540, Student $390

Presenter/s: A/Prof Areti-Angeliki (Argie) Veroniki, Brown University; A/Prof Emily Karahalios, University of Melbourne; Prof Joanne McKenzie, Monash University

    Overview:

Standard (pairwise) meta-analysis enables the statistical synthesis of data from multiple studies to obtain a single combined estimate of a treatment effect. Network meta-analysis is an extension to pairwise meta-analysis that allows for the comparison of multiple competing interventions that form a connected network of studies. Many of the methods for pairwise and network meta-analysis are commonplace but new methods continue to emerge. For example, new methods continue to be proposed for synthesizing data for rare outcomes, and network meta-analysis of multi-component interventions.

Note: This workshop is divided into two days. Interested persons can register for one or both days.

    Cluster randomised trials: the essentials

    Date: Thursday 19th February

    Fees: Standard $540, Student $390

Presenter/s: Prof Jessica Kasza, Monash University; Prof Andrew Forbes. Monash University

    Overview:

In this workshop you will learn about the fundamentals of cluster randomised trial designs: learning when they are appropriate; which designs are best suited to what settings; how to analyse data from these designs; and how to plan these designs (including how you can use simulation to investigate properties of designs). You’ll also learn about issues that can impact the interpretation of results from cluster randomised trials (e.g. informative cluster size), and about more flexible variants of standard design types (e.g. staircase designs, the batched stepped wedge and repeated inclusion cluster randomised trials) which can make infeasible trials feasible.

Presentation Title: Analysing adverse health outcomes attributable to high temperatures and heatwaves

    Abstract

Global warming has been associated with increasing frequency, intensity, and duration of heatwaves worldwide. There is growing evidence of the adverse impacts of extreme temperatures on human mortality and morbidity. Large routinely collected health datasets provide an opportunity to quantify the acute effects of high temperatures and heatwaves on population health outcomes. The statistical approaches to model the relationship between heat and adverse health outcomes whilst factoring in known and unknown confounders over time, however, are complex. This presentation provides an overview of contemporary epidemiological approaches used to model and estimate heat-related health risks using daily data.

    Presenter Bio: Dr Matthew Borg

Dr Matthew Borg is a senior biostatistician, a research epidemiologist and a former clinical doctor. His journey began at the University of Adelaide, where he earned his medical degree and later transitioned to specialise in biostatistics and epidemiology. His research interests encompass clinical trials, environmental epidemiology with a focus on the adverse health impacts of heat, public health, occupational health, climate change, nephrology and oncology. Matthew primarily works in early phase clinical trials, where he co-manages all statistical aspects of clinical trials, from reviewing protocols to conducting complex statistical analyses. With a strong analytical mindset and a collaborative spirit, he advances clinical trials and public health, leverages his biostatistical expertise to address pressing health challenges and improve medical outcomes.

Topic: Group, Test, Model: Statistical Strategies for Rare‑Outcome Surveillance Using Pooled Data

Group testing, also known as pooled testing, provides an efficient framework for detecting low‑prevalence infections by combining individual specimens into groups/pools for testing. This approach has become increasingly important across human, livestock and wildlife disease surveillance, where budgets are tight and early detection is critical. In this talk, I introduce the foundations of group testing, outline its practical advantages and limitations, and highlight the breadth application domains. I then focus on my recent work applying pooled testing to molecular xenomonitoring, where pathogen DNA is detected in vectors rather than hosts. I discuss how statistical principles can guide survey design—balancing pool size, number of tests and sampling effort—and show how regression modelling can be applied to group-tested data. Extensions to mixed‑effects models support spatial prediction, mapping and inference in hierarchical surveillance systems..

    Presenter: Dr Angus McLure

Dr Angus McLure is mathematical modeller of infectious diseases. His current research includes modelling the transmission and elimination of lymphatic filariasis; the design and analysis of molecular xenomonitoring surveys (catching disease vectors such as mosquitos to detect the presence of a disease); and source attribution modelling of foodborne disease. Angus has worked on projects across a wide range of diseases and pathogens including, lymphatic filariasis, C. difficile, Dengue, Campylobacter, Salmonella, and many other foodborne diseases. Angus McLure developed and maintains an R package, PoolTestR, for the analysis of molecular xenomonitoring data and other applications where data are tested in pools: https://github.com/AngusMcLure/PoolTestR

Dinner: After the talk, there will be a dinner at 7.30pm at Kinn Thai Restaurant, 148 Bunda St, Canberra.

Leading with Statistics: Insights from a Lifetime of Collaboration and Innovation

Emeritus Professor Kaye Basford AM FTSE

From her early career as a consulting statistician (for over a decade) and then academic at The University of Queensland, supporting researchers across diverse disciplines and delivering foundational statistics courses, Kaye will reflect on how statisticians can thrive in any field in which they are passionate. She chose the challenging and rewarding interface among agriculture, quantitative genetics, and plant breeding, where her innovative methods for analysing genotype-by-environment interactions have directly improved crop breeding programs and global food security.

Kaye will share evidence-based insights on how statisticians make exceptionally effective leaders: through rigorous thinking, collaborative skills, and clear communication of complex ideas. Drawing from her leadership as Head of School, President of the UQ Academic Board, President of the Statistical Society of Australia (2005–2007), President of the International Biometric Society (2010–2011), and board roles with the International Rice Research Institute, Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, Crawford Fund for Food Security and Australian Plant Phenomics Network, she will illustrate what makes good leaders in science and beyond.

Throughout, Kaye will discuss how family support, her lifelong love of basketball, ongoing involvement in community fitness programs, and broader community service have sustained her energy, perspective and commitment to mentoring and service over five decades. This has been balanced by many travel adventures (both overseas and within Australia) with her husband Alan and family. Since retiring at the end of 2020, Kaye remains highly active, serving on multiple committees and continuing to work in her office two days per week, demonstrating that impact and engagement can extend well into later career stages.

This talk is ideal for students, early and mid-career statisticians, data scientists, mathematicians, those in the late stage of their career contemplating continued contributions or transitions, and anyone who works with numbers or aspires to evidence-based leadership. Come prepared for an engaging Q&A!

      Effective Networking as a Statistician

Presenter: Prof Kelley M Kidwell, University of Michigan

Date and Time: Thursday 7th May 2026, 11am AEST

      Abstract

Effective networking is a critical but often under (or never) taught professional skill for statisticians at all career stages. In this seminar, we will reframe networking as a purposeful, values driven practice focused on building authentic, mutually beneficial professional relationships rather than transactional exchanges. Designed for both mentors and mentees, the talk will address how networking goals and strategies evolve across career stages and roles, and how mentors can actively support mentees in developing sustainable professional networks. Drawing on examples from academia, collaborative research, and professional service, the seminar will cover practical approaches to networking in one on one, group, and virtual settings; strategies for initiating and maintaining professional connections; and common barriers to networking, including discomfort, power dynamics, and time constraints. Participants will also discuss how inclusive and intentional networking strengthens mentoring relationships and contributes to long term career development within the statistical community. The session will be interactive and reflective, with actionable takeaways for integrating networking into everyday professional practice.
