Join a vibrant mathematics and statistics community at Macquarie University, ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide.

    Opportunity

Macquarie University is offering 1-year Master of Research (MRes) and 3-year PhD positions to international applicants in mathematics, statistics and data science.

Our researchers are nationally and internationally recognised across pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics and data science. Successful applicants will join a diverse research environment with students and researchers from around the world.

Scholarship support is competitively awarded and includes tuition-fee support and a tax-free living allowance of AUD$39,700 per year (2026 rate), supplemented by income from teaching opportunities.

MRes scholarship pathways can lead to PhD progression and consideration for a three-year PhD scholarship.

    Research strengths

    • Pure mathematicsCategory theory, including the internationally renowned Centre of Australian Category Theory, harmonic and functional analysis, geometric analysis, and partial differential equations.
    • Applied mathematics: Waves, dynamics and mathematical modelling, including fluid dynamics, mathematical biology and ecology, electromagnetism, and computational methods for physical systems.
    • Statistics and data science: Statistical modelling for complex data, variable selection, computational statistics, biostatistics, nonparametric methods, change-point detection, Monte Carlo simulation, false discovery rate control and machine learning, with applications across domains.

    Courses and eligibility

    • Master of Research:  Applicants with a coursework Master’s are eligible to enter the research-only 1-year MRes.
    • PhD: PhD applicants require a prior research Master’s, or start with the Macquarie MRes first.
    • Selection: Scholarships are awarded competitively. Strong results in a prior Master’s degree, including any thesis component, are typically expected. Publications are beneficial but not essential.
    • Global PhDs: Macquarie offers the opportunity to do a cotutelle PhD with a list of global partner institutions.
    • English Language: Proof of English language testing is required. International applicants must also meet Macquarie University’s admission and visa requirements.

    Applications

Submit an Expression of Interest (EoI) via the online form by Sunday 12 July. Supervisors will then arrange interviews and shortlisting for a final application deadline to the University by 31 July. The EoI portal is not the formal Macquarie application; shortlisted candidates will be advised about the full application process.
