SSA Canberra invites you to the 2022 Knibbs lecture, the final branch meeting of the year. This year, we are delighted to have Heather Battey from Imperial College London present in-person (and streamed online) on the roles of R.A. Fisher and D.R. Cox in the development of statistics.

After the lecture, in-person attendees (and others if they so wish) are invited to join a dinner afterwards with the speaker. Please see below for more details!

    Date: Tuesday 6 December 2022

Time: 5:45pm – no later than 7:15pm AEDT

VenueRoom 3.02 in Marie Reay Teaching Centre, The Australian National University, or via Zoom. For in-person attendance, please RSVP by 4pm Monday 5 December by entering your details on the SSA Canberra meeting and dinner attendance sheet, or contacting warren.muller@csiro.au.

For in-person attendance, Masks are recommended but not compulsory. No food or drink is allowed in the venue.

Speaker: Heather Battey, Imperial College London

Topic: The role of R. A. Fisher and D. R. Cox in the development of statistics

AbstractR. A. Fisher instigated a high proportion of the developments in statistics during the first two-thirds of the 20th century. This talk will touch on some of these contributions and their continuing relevance. In particular, it will trace the development of some core methodology of a practicing statistician from their Fisherian origins, with special emphasis on the work of D. R. Cox, its historical context, and subsequent evolution. In the process, some key ideas will be reconstructed from unifying principles, providing a different exposition to that of the original papers.

Biography: Heather Battey is a Reader in Statistics within the Department of Mathematics, Imperial College London. Her research is primarily in statistical theory, particularly the theoretical foundations of inference in the presence of a large number of nuisance parameters, for which she holds a fellowship from the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. She holds several editorial roles, including for Biometrika and Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B.

    Dinner:

After the talk we will be holding a dinner at Bamiyan Restaurant, 10 Lonsdale Street, Braddon ACT (https://bamiyanrestaurant.com.au/).

If you are interested in attending the dinner, please let us know by 6pm Sunday 4 December by entering your details at SSA Canberra meeting and dinner attendance sheet or contacting me (warren.muller@csiro.au; 0407 916 868). Please regard this as a firm commitment, not just an intention.

NOTE: We are offering discounts to SSA early career and student members who attend dinner! For this meeting, dinners will be a fixed charge of $10 for student members and $20 for early career members.
