Attached is a job ad for APS6 level positions at ABARES. One of these positions will be with our quantitative science team. This is a small team highly qualified in quantitative ecology, mathematics and statistics, that undertakes quantitative research, analyses and support across the department. The types of capability include:
- · Mathematical and statistical modelling of ecological, epidemiological, economic and biological processes, including integrated models
- · General mathematical and statistical analysis and risk analysis
- · High level programming
- · Manipulation and interpretation of complex data sets
- · Interpretation of academic research and determining its effective and practical implementation
- · Communication of results and their practical interpretation

These are applied by the team either independently or in collaboration with other internal and external researchers and policy colleagues, to address policy and operational questions. For example:
- · Quantitative approaches to assess rapid-response strategies in the event of an outbreak or incursion
- · Development of sampling and surveillance strategies to establish the ‘presence’ or ‘absence’ of pests and diseases and manage risk – at the border as goods arrive, or post-border to retain trade status or initiate emergency responses
- · Benefit-cost analyses that integrates economic models with ecological/epidemiological models for pests or diseases to determine appropriate responses
