SSA NSW Early Career and Student Statistician event
The NSW branch of the Statistical Society of Australia warmly invites all undergraduate, postgraduate and early career statisticians and data scientists to attend our annual Early Career and Student Statistician event on Thursday the 19th of November 2020 at 7:00-8:30 PM. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year's event will take place online on Zoom and may be accessed via https://zoom.uts.edu.au/j/86032946414 (Password: NSW_SSA).

This year we have speakers from governmental, educational and financial sectors. The speakers will provide insights into their professions. If you have ever wondered what you can do after doing a statistics degree, then this event is for you!

Meet our speakers 

James Bailey

James is a mathematician at heart and is immersed in all things technology. His specialty is in building tools for his clients to automate complex calculations and big data reporting. He has participated in executing many high-profile remediation cases following the Financial Services Royal Commission, and also advises on best practice in data and modelling governance. James has worked across the Insurance and Banking industry, where he was part of an Insurer’s in-house analytics team, and later a major Australian bank optimising the load balance of a 5000+ FTE operations department.

Frank Gallagher

Frank is a Project Officer within the Moon to Mars team at the Australian Space Agency. Frank’s role within the team is to provide technical and programmatic assessment in support of the Moon to Mars Initiative. Frank began his career as a data engineer for a professional motor racing team based in Silverstone, UK. He then interned as a fuel systems engineer at Airbus in the UK, contributing to the technical development of advanced fuel systems for passenger aircraft. Seeking a career change, Frank studied at Cranfield University where he gained an MSc in Astronautics and Space Systems Engineering. Prior to joining the Australian Space Agency, Frank worked in the project management office at Airbus Defence and Space. Here he worked on early phase mission proposals to the European Space Agency (ESA) and supported campaign development for satellite communications programs.

Linda Hamilton

Linda received training in statistical modeling and psychometrics while completing her PhD. She now works as a Senior Statistical Analyst with the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE) at the NSW Department of Education. She has a varied role which includes data analysis, psychometrics, statistical modeling, funding models, and providing advice on evaluation and methodology across CESE and DoE.

Nicole Mealing

Nicole has a PhD in Biostatistics from the University of Technology Sydney and is the owner of Simplify Stats (https://www.simplifystats.com.au/), an education consultancy that brings statistical literacy to the general public. She is also a Principal Performance Analyst at the NSW Ministry of Health working with multi-level, multi-membership, linked health data. Her specialities are in analysing large, administrative data assets and in translating results to a range of stakeholder audiences.
