NSW Branch: Statisticians and data scientists careers and networking night

20 September 2017

The 2017 edition of NSW Branch’s Young Statisticians night was a great success! We were fortunate to be joined by a variety of industry leaders who shared their unique experiences in the field of statistics across industry, government and academia. Speaker content was short, sharp and relevant for the audience (perfect to stimulate further discussion).

The student theme was distinctly evident with a University of Technology Sydney bar packed to the rafters, along with pizza and a well-considered quantity of beverages. It was an excellent networking opportunity for students who all embraced learning about the practical side of statistics, analytics and data science.

Speakers included:

  • Ian Oppermann, NSW Government Data Analytics Centre
  • Marianne Menictas, Atlassian
  • Thomas Keevers, Department of Defence (Defence Science and Technology Group)
  • Dejana Menjiza, PwC
  • Jasmine Tan, Deloitte
  • Passiona Cottee, NSW Government Finance, Services and Innovation

Based on my experience, I can assure members that the statisticians of tomorrow are technically very capable and promise to be effective inter-disciplinary communicators.

The NSW Branch Council wishes to express their thanks to the speakers for their time, along with the enthusiastic young attendees, and many individuals who contributed towards this event (Mahrita Harahap in particular).
