    The Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the School of Physics, Mathematics and Computing at The University of Western Australia is renowned for its research and teaching in pure and applied mathematics, statistics and data science.

    About the opportunity

    The Research Fellow will have the opportunity to perform research in statistical learning and analyse multivariate and high-dimensional data. You will be involved in but not limited to developing statistical learning approaches in some of these areas: classification and clustering, dimension reduction, feature selection and sparsity, etc. You will be responsible for applying statistical theory and methods to different domains which may include functional data such as proteomics mass spectrometry imaging or fMRI imaging, and complex multivariate data from astronomy. You will take responsibility for developing computer programs which test and implement these approaches on real and simulated data.

    You will also present research outcomes by writing and publishing journal articles and giving presentations at conferences, as well as supervise Honours students and co-supervise postgraduate research students on projects related to your research.

    About you

    With your strong computing experience, you will be a passionate researcher driven to conduct high quality and high impact research, publish results in peer-reviewed journal and present results at conferences. Under limited supervision, you will have initiative to consult and collaborate with experts within the different application domains and contribute to report and grant writing. You will have a collegiate attitude with proven ability to work effectively in a team and with diverse groups both internally with different Schools, Faculties as well as externally with industry and government personnel.
