The Statistical Society of Australia is pleased to announce the following webinar, exclusively for members of SSA and NZSA:
Writing successful fellowships
· When: Friday, 24 July 2020, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM (AEST)
· Location: via Zoom, check local time
About this webinar
Success rates for fellowship applications are plummeting, but success is not impossible! This interactive panel-style webinar will feature brief presentations from three past/current SSA presidents: Distinguished Professor Kerrie Mengersen (ARC Laureate), Professor Scott Sisson (ARC Future Fellow) and Professor Adrian Barnett (NHMRC Fellow), followed by an extended discussion and question time. Gain knowledge and inspiration to help optimise your chances!
About the presenters
Kerrie Mengersen is a statistician and Director of the Centre for Data Science at Queensland University of Technology. She is Deputy Director of the ARC Centre for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers: Big Data, Big Models and New Insights (ACEMS). Kerrie is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Australian Social Sciences Academy, and the Queensland Academy of Arts and Sciences. As an ARC Laureate Fellow, she works on the development and application of methods for using diverse types of data to learn about complex systems and problems in health, the environment and industry. She is currently working with international teams to use data science to gain insights into national and international dynamics of covid-19.
Scott Sisson is Professor and ARC Future Fellow in Statistics at UNSW Sydney. He is currently Director of the UNSW Data Science Hub, and a Deputy Director of ACEMS. Scott's research mostly comprises playing with computers until something interesting happens.
Adrian Barnett has a BSc and Phd in Statistics. He has 22 years' experience working as an applied statistician in health. He has won independent funding as a statistician, including (ironically) funding to investigate the funding process. He publishes papers in health with clinical colleagues, but also leads his own research projects in the area of meta-research, which uses research to examine the research process. He's worked for drug companies, the UK Medical Research Council and universities. He is the current president of the Statistical Society of Australia.
