What is the “Young Statisticians Network”?
SSA’s Young Statisticians Network (YSN) is Australia’s premier group dedicated to the needs of early career statisticians. The group’s aim is to provide a forum for networking and exchanging information for early career statisticians from around Australia and promote the interests of early career statisticians to the broader community.
Who qualifies as a “Young Statistician”?
To qualify as a “Young Statistician” you either have to be studying statistics or have graduated in the last 5 years and work in a statistics related area. There are no age restrictions.
Where do Young Statisticians come from?
Everywhere! Universities, technical institutes, federal and state government departments, research institutes, consultancies, companies…essentially, you can find young statisticians scattered right throughout the community.
What does the YSN do?
The YSN creates many opportunities for students or early career statisticians to meet and mingle with peers and distinguished statisticians. It holds YS-specific events such as a biennial national Young Statisticians Conference, special sessions and social events at Australian Statistical conferences, as well as state-based events: career nights, dinners, networking.
Who manages the YSN?
The YSN is headed by a Chair at the national level. For the 2019/2020 financial year, the Chair position is held by Raaj Kishore Biswas.
The Chair’s main duties are to organise and coordinate Young Statisticians’ activities at the national level, and to represent the interests of Young Statisticians at Central Council and Executive Committee meetings of the Society.
At the state level, each of the branches of the Statistical Society of Australia has a Young Statisticians’ representative, who is responsible for coordinating activities at the branch level during the year. The current representatives are:
- Matias Quiroz (NSW) – firstname.lastname@example.org
- Georgia Tsambos (VIC) – email@example.com
- Mingzhu Sun - (QLD) – firstname.lastname@example.org
- Nidhi Menon (Canberra) – email@example.com
- Deneegan Subramanian (WA) - firstname.lastname@example.org
- Wendy Li (SA) - email@example.com
