Young Statisticians

The Young Statisticians section of the SSAI WA Branch supports and runs events for:
- WA-based undergraduate and postgraduate students who are studying or have an interest in statistics; and
- WA-based statisticians of any age who are in the first five years practising statistics
Members of the Young Statisticians section receive discounted membership of the SSAI, and are able to attend all their events, some also at discounted rates. Members are also able to participate in events for young statisticians run by the SSAI Central Council - more information is available here.
The Young Statisticians offer a scholarship of $800 for outstanding WA-based students studying honours in statistics. The prize is awarded to one student or shared equally between two students (i.e. $400 each); the prize also includes one year's free membership of the SSAI. Applications for the scholarship open early each year and the recipient(s) is announced at the May monthly meeting of the SSAI WA Branch. Information regarding the 2011 scholarship is available here. The submission deadline for this award has now passed and applications are no longer being accepted.
The May monthly meeting of the SSAI WA Branch is set aside for young statisticians. Members of the Young Statisticians section (including the previous year's honours scholarship recipient(s)) can be invited to present a short seminar on their studies. The Young Statisticians also holds occasional social events, and in alternate years a day-long conference for its members. You might also be interested to know that currently three members of the Branch Council, including our representative, are members of the Young Statisticans section.
To join us, simply apply for membership of the SSAI, then contact our Branch Secretary via the Join/Contact Us page. We also have Facebook and LinkedIn groups (the name of both is "WA Young Statisticians - part of the Statistical Society of Australia Inc.") that any young statistician in WA (not necessarily SSAI members) is welcome to join.
Workshops
Young Statisticians' workshops are held (approximately) every two years. the most recent being in 2011. These workshops provide an opportunity for young statisticians in WA to share their work, to network and to meet and learn from industry and research leaders. Slides from talks made at the 2009 and 2011 workshops are now available (where speakers have granted permission); we hope to increase the number of talks for which slides are available over the coming months.
