Title: Numerical distributions: Bugs in water, Flood prediction, Grey-box models, Regularised and non nested models
Abstract: It is often convenient to generate probability distributions numerically. I will present examples where I have found this useful. A numerically generated distribution can have a more direct relation to the problem of interest.
I will briefly discuss testing for bugs in Adelaide water, fitting a flood distribution in north Queensland, regularisation of a model with excess parameters, Grey-box models (my favourite), and comparing non nested models in regression. Biography: Bill Whiten is a retired professor who spent 45 years in the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre at the University of Queensland. In addition to the analysis of data, modelling, and simulation, for mineral processing plants, he has taken an active part in many different projects with the Mathematics in Industry Study Group. Grey-box modelling techniques have been a particular interest.
