The Statistical Society of Australia and the School of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Sydney, are pleased to announce the following workshop:
Introduction to data processing using python
presented by Matt Shepit on 26 July 2017 in Sydney.
About the workshop
The objective of this course is to provide you with the essentials for your journey into python/numpy/scipy/pandas for your data-driven day to day. A general familiarity with mathematics/statistics is assumed, but not essential. Some familiarity with a programming / scripting language is assumed, but also not essential. Rather, this event seeks to sit in the happy middle ground between analysis and programming, without being terribly rigorous about either–enabling the art of the possible.
As such, this one-day course will be split into four parts:
* python basics (object types, formatting, etc.)
* connecting to and importing data (local / remote storage)
* analysis using some of the many numerical libraries available
* presenting your data (visualization and reporting options)
This is by no means a comprehensive course on any one topic, but by the end of the day you should be well equipped to dive into a data-driven problem with the confidence that you can beat it!
About the presenter
Matt Shepit studied Engineering and Mathematics at the University of Calgary before moving to New Zealand in 2005, and eventually settled in Sydney in 2011. His background has been primarily in fundamental research and development, migrating to AI / Machine Learning a few years ago. Currently at a leading professional services firm as a Data Scientist, Matt has been busy developing a number of analytics tools in Python and Fortran. He also has a basset hound, Farnsworth, who is a much bigger celebrity.
