Canberra

The Canberra branch, founded in 1962, is one of six regional branches of the Statistical Society of Australia. The objectives of the branch are to provide the focus and organisation of local activities, and a forum for all people interested in the theory and application of statistical methods. The society endeavors to enhance public awareness of the need for statistical thinking.

The Canberra branch holds monthly evening meetings on topics of general statistical interest. Meetings are preceded by informal discussions and refreshments and all members and guests are warmly invited to have dinner with the speaker after the meeting. The meetings thus provide excellent opportunity to meet other statisticians both socially and professionally. Members are sent a branch meeting notice about two weeks prior to every meeting. Information about other local statistical activities can also be included in this mailing. Please see our branch meetings page for a listing of upcoming events.

From time to time the branch holds half day meetings on topics of general interest to statisticians in the Canberra region. These have included workshops on the analysis of survey data, and applying experimental and statistical design to practical situations. The branch has also organised short conferences for young statisticians, in conjunction with the New South Wales branch.

The Canberra branch awards several prizes to Statistics students studying at university in the ACT. Prizes of $200 plus one year’s subscription to the society are awarded to the best second-year statistics/econometrics student at the Australian National University and at the University of Canberra and prizes of $250 plus one year’s subscription to the society are also awarded to the best third-year statistics/econometrics student at the Australian National University and at the University of Canberra, and to the best second-year statistics/econometrics student at the Australian Defence Force Academy.

Members of the Canberra branch are also members of the national society and receive the SSAI newsletter which is published four times a year, and the Australian Journal of Statistics which is published three times a year. The society also organises regular conferences. It is the main umbrella organisation for statisticians in Australia and has representation on various national bodies.
