CPD 33: Introductory Analysis of Linked Data

13-17 July 2012 at Flinders University

9:00am - 5:00pm
(Registration desk will be open from 8:30am on the first day of the workshop)

This intensive five-day course, developed by Professor D’Arcy Holman, covers the theory and practical skills needed to analyse linked data from administrative, clinical and research databases at the introductory to intermediate level. In particular, it includes:

i] an overview of the theory of data linkage systems and methods
ii] principles of epidemiologic measurement and methods applicable to linked data covering disease trends and health care utilisation and outcomes
iii] minimising sources of measurement error
iv] statistical analyses on longitudinal linked health data
v] conceptualisation and management of large linked data files, and
vi] writing computing syntax to prepare linked data files for analysis and production of results from statistical procedures in SPSS, SAS or Stata [the course supports all three].

Basic familiarity with computing syntax and a working knowledge of statistical concepts, including regression models, used in data analysis in the medical and social sciences is assumed.

Participants are required to bring their own laptops supporting either SPSS, SAS or Stata.

About the presenter:

Professor Holman is an epidemiologist, public health physician and law graduate whose career has spanned leadership positions across the academic, government, community and private sectors. In 1994, he moved from a senior executive post in government to full-time academia as the Foundation Professor of Public Health at The University of Western Australia. Since that time he has built a reputation as a researcher who makes a difference. His team at UWA has budded off seven professors from among its 40 or so PhDs and post-doctoral fellows over time. In 2006, he received the Sidney Sax Public Health Medal, Australia’s highest professional award for lifetime achievement in his field.
